Mixed Reality (MR) headsets have gained popularity in recent years and are poised to revolutionize the education sector. This ongoing project explores the potential applications of MR technology in a university education setting, focusing on the opportunities it presents and the challenges it poses. MR classrooms, by integrating virtual and physical elements, have the potential to enhance student engagement, facilitate immersive learning, and provide interactive and personalized educational content. We present a prototype of a future mixed-reality classroom environment, that allows rapid prototyping of mixed-reality classroom designs & pedagogical strategies. However, the adoption of MR classrooms also entails various technical challenges. Apart from the technical issues such as synchronization, real and virtual world blending, and calibration, understanding the content and teaching methods that are particularly suited for multi-user mixed reality is also important in empowering educators to design engaging and effective learning activities that leverage the full potential of this technology. This project examines the opportunities and challenges MR classrooms present in education and highlights potential strategies for effectively using Mixed Reality in classrooms.
